SAVE THE WONDER BAR
MADISON’S PROHIBITION ROADHOUSE

Picture

IN 2021, MORE THAN 3,000 PEOPLE RALLIED TO SAVE THE WONDER BAR, BUILT CIRCA 1932.

Working with a group of local preservationists, the developer agreed to support a nomination to designate the Wonder Bar as a City of Madison Landmark and to preserve and incorporate it as part of his development. That application was put on hold awaiting McGrath’s final plans and approvals for construction.

NOW, RANGE HILL PARTNERS PROPOSES TO DEMOLISH THE WONDER BAR and build 190 units of market-rate housing in its place.

THE SAME LOCAL PRESERVATIONISTS HAS REACTIVATED THE 2021 PROPOSAL FOR LANDMARK STATUS FOR THE WONDER BAR.

Demolition of the Wonder Bar would eliminate an important part of our cultural, political, and social history.

Preserving our city’s historic landmarks should not be seen as at odds with development.
Redevelopment and historic preservation can co-occur. Our past enriches our present.
