IN RECOGNITION OF THE FACT THAT:
1) Madison Landmarks staff first received a nomination in 2021 to designate the Wonder Bar as a City of Madison Landmark;
2) Madison’s Prohibition Roadhouse (aka the “Wonder Bar”), built circa 1932, is the only extant example of a roadhouse or speakeasy in Madison;
3) The Wonder Bar represents a period in American history, Prohibition, that should not be forgotten;
4) The Wonder Bar operated as an iconic gathering place in Madison from the early 1930s until its closure due to COVID;
5) More than 3,000 people showed their support for preserving the Wonder Bar by signing the petition in 2021;
6) The Wonder Bar building takes up only about 12% of the site (including its parking lots) of Range Hill Partners proposed development and can be integrated into plans to redevelop the site.

- Support approving the application for Landmark status for the Wonder Bar (by both the Landmarks Commission and the Common Council).
- Support solutions for integrating preservation of the Wonder Bar into the design for adding new housing.
